Duct repair and sealing

Sealing leaks and repairing damaged sections.

Ducts are assembled from pieces, and every joint, collar, takeoff and boot is a place air can escape. Years of attic heat dry out old tape, flex gets crushed under stored boxes, and boots pull away from the ceiling.

Most of that can be repaired without replacing the system. We find where the air is going, fix those places and check the airflow afterwards.

Sealing closes the openings where air escapes. On accessible joints that means mastic, a thick paste brushed over every seam, collar and takeoff, sometimes with mesh for larger gaps. Foil tape rated UL 181 handles some connections. Boots get sealed to the drywall from inside the house.

What to expect

How a duct repair goes

The technician finds where the air is going: disconnected runs, crushed sections, failed tape and loose boots. You get a written price for what gets fixed before any work starts.

Seams, collars and takeoffs get mastic. UL 181 foil tape goes where it suits. Sections where the material has failed are replaced rather than patched.

Airflow at the registers is checked before and after. If a $69 diagnostic visit found the problem, it is credited toward the work. Our labor carries a one-year warranty.

Good to know

Before you call

  • Why the old tape failed

Cloth-backed tape was the standard for decades. Summer after summer of attic heat dries the adhesive out and it lets go. Any tape used on ducts now should be foil tape marked UL 181, and most joints are better off with mastic. Read more

  • Dust that keeps coming back

A leak on the return side pulls dusty attic air into the system, past the filter, and blows it out of the registers. Cleaning the ducts does not fix that. Sealing the leak does. Read more

  • What a real duct job includes

Sealing every joint, collar and boot, replacing crushed or failing runs, and fixing the return if it is starved. A vacuum in a register is not a duct improvement, whatever the flyer says. Read more

  • Where the energy goes

The Department of Energy puts typical duct losses at 20 to 30 percent. In an attic that loss is paid for twice: once for the air that escapes, once for the heat the rest picks up on the way. Read more

  • Sealing does not fix design

Undersized runs, crushed flex along its length, thin insulation throughout, or a layout that never served the back bedroom are replacement problems. Sealing those gives you a tight system that still does not work. Read more
