A multi-zone mini split is one outdoor unit feeding two or more indoor heads. Each head has its own remote and its own setpoint, so a bedroom can sit at one temperature while the living room sits at another.
That part works exactly as advertised. The disappointment comes when the system is sized like central air, laid out as an afterthought, or expected to heat one room while it cools another.
One outdoor unit for several rooms also means one set of decisions for several rooms: the outdoor capacity, how many heads it can turn down for at night, and the layout of the lines behind the walls. Those get planned before anything is mounted.
Why people call us for multi-zone mini splits
- Whole-house ductless
- Several rooms with different needs
- No ductwork
- Additions plus main house

- Zone design and head placement
- Outdoor unit sizing
- Line set routing
- Commissioning and controls
How a multi-zone installation goes
Each room gets sized on its own, and the outdoor unit is matched to what the heads will realistically ask for at once.
Every head has its own pair of refrigerant lines and a communication wire back to the outdoor unit, so the layout gets planned before anything is mounted. You get a written quote with the heads, the capacity and the line runs.
On the day, heads are mounted, lines run and drains sloped to the outside, then the system is pressure-tested, evacuated and started. You get shown every remote and the filters. Our labor carries a one-year warranty on top of the manufacturer's.
We repair, maintain and install these brands. Logos identify the equipment we work on and do not imply endorsement by the manufacturer.
Before you call
One compressor, shared
The outdoor unit holds a variable-speed compressor that ramps up and down to match whatever the heads are asking for. With one bedroom head running at night it idles along; with every head on in a heat wave it runs near full output. Read more
All heat or all cool
Every head on the system runs in the same mode. Separate temperatures, yes; one room heating while another cools, no. Households that want that need separate single-zone systems. Read more
Do not oversize to be safe
An oversized head closes its valve as soon as it hits setpoint and the compressor never settles into the low, steady running that makes these systems quiet and efficient. Add up the heads and compare them with the outdoor rating. Read more
Multi-zone or several single-zone systems
Multi-zone means one outdoor unit and less equipment outside, which matters on a narrow side yard. Separate single-zone units take more space but each runs on its own, and one failure does not take down the rest. Read more
Common questions
No. Every head on a multi-zone system runs in the same mode, because they share one compressor. Each room can have its own temperature, but they all heat or all cool. Read more
The compressor is variable-speed. With one bedroom head running at night it idles along at low speed. When every head kicks on in a heat wave it runs near full output. Metering valves decide how much refrigerant each head gets. Read more
It depends on the outdoor unit. Each model has a maximum number of heads it can connect, and the heads added together have to fit its rating. Within that, each head is sized to its own room, not padded to be safe. The quote shows the head count and the capacity. Read more
Multi-zone means one outdoor unit and less equipment outside. Separate single-zone systems mean more outdoor units, but each room is independent, including its mode, and one failure does not take down the rest. The layout of the house usually decides.

Usually that head is undersized for its room while the others are not, or its line run is much longer. Adding up the heads against the outdoor rating and checking each room's load is how it gets sorted, and it is part of a multi-zone quote. Read more
