Most mini split problems are one of three: it is not cooling or heating, it is dripping water, or it is flashing an error code. The first two often have simple causes, and one of them you can check from the couch.
When it is not simple, a technician tests the system before anything is replaced and gives you the price in writing.
Refrigerant is on the list of causes, but it is last for a reason. A sealed system does not use refrigerant up, so a low charge means a leak that has to be found and fixed, and a guess in either direction damages the compressor.
Why people call us for mini split repair
- Head blowing warm air
- Water dripping from the head
- Error code on the remote
- Outdoor unit not starting
- Unusual noise

$69 diagnostic, credited toward the work
- Refrigerant and leak check
- Board and sensor diagnostics
- Drain line and pump check
- Written repair options
How a mini split repair visit goes
An owner answers the phone, 6am to 10pm, seven days, and we usually get to you within a few hours. Tell us what the system is doing and where it is. If it is not safe to run, we say so before anyone drives out.
The simple things get ruled out first, because they are a common cause: the remote's mode, the setpoint, a timer, the filter and the drain line. Then the coil, the drain, the communication wiring, the outdoor unit and the refrigerant charge, in that order.
Before any work starts you see a written price. Go ahead and the $69 diagnostic is credited toward it. Our labor carries a one-year warranty on top of the manufacturer's. The head is run in cooling and heating before the technician leaves.
We repair, maintain and install these brands. Logos identify the equipment we work on and do not imply endorsement by the manufacturer.
Before you call
Read the remote before anything else
The snowflake is cool, the sun is heat, the water drop is dry mode, which feels cool for a while and then does not, and the fan icon just moves room air. Auto can decide to heat on a cool morning. Then check the setpoint, the timer and sleep mode. Read more
A weak breeze and a musty smell
That is a starved coil: a dirty filter, or gray fuzz on the fins and the blower wheel. Pull the cover and look. Frost on the fins means the coil is starved of air; fuzz means it needs a proper cleaning, not just a filter rinse. Read more
Water on the wall
A blocked drain line is the usual cause. Water staining on the drywall below the head, or a musty smell, means water has been getting behind the unit for a while and a tech should see how far it went. Read more
Error codes are a starting point
A flashing light pattern on the head maps to a code in the manual. It tells the technician where to look first, from a communication fault to a sensor to a protective shutdown, but it is not the diagnosis by itself.
Parts for older systems are the hard ones

Common questions
The remote. The snowflake is cool, the sun is heat, the water drop is dry mode and the fan icon only moves room air. A head in dry or fan mode feels like a fault. Then check that the setpoint is below the room temperature and no timer is active. Read more
Condensate is not draining. The head pulls moisture out of the air, it collects in a pan under the coil, and a small hose carries it outside. A blocked line, a tilted head or a frozen coil sends the water somewhere else, usually down the wall. Read more
It can be, but it is last on the list for a reason. A sealed system does not use refrigerant up, so a low charge means a leak that has to be found and fixed, not just topped off. Mode, airflow and a dirty coil are far more common. Read more
On a multi-zone system each head has its own lines and its own communication wire back to the outdoor unit, so one can fail alone. Also check the modes: every head has to run in the same mode, and a head asking for heat while the others cool will sit idle. Read more
$69, told to you before you book. It covers the visit and a written quote, and it is credited toward the work if you go ahead.
Usually within a few hours. We are open 6am to 10pm, seven days.
Check that the head is in cool mode and the setpoint is below the room temperature first. If the mode is right, the usual causes are a dirty indoor coil, a frozen coil from a starved filter, or a charge problem, in that order. Those get measured on the visit. Read more
“Dave took care of my family and I during the heat wave! Diagnosed the problem, got it fixed, and was on his way to the next house. Great service! Thank you!”
